Area Description

Southold was established in 1640 by the Puritans and is thought to be the first English settlement on the North Fork.


The Puritans, led by Reverend John Youngs, came to the area to start his church anew. The main settlement consisted of a four acre lot with a church built in the northeast corner of what is today cemetery of The First Presbyterian Church of Southold. This church was not only used for religious purposes, but as its government offices and its arsenal.


As you drive down Main Road, you can see the various local businesses that Southold has to offer: Southold Opera House Inc, White Flower Farm House, Jeni’s Main Street Grill, Polywoda Beverage, The North Fork Roasting Company, Mullen Motors, The Giving Room. About a mile north, if you’re driving on County Road 48, you will see even more restaurants, farms, vineyards and other small businesses.

Southold is surrounded by beautiful beaches such as Kenney’s Beach, Goose Creek, and Founders Landing. Additionaly, other popular hamlets like Greenport and Mattituck are only 10 minutes away, Greenport to the east and Mattituck to the west.
